The first Jeep was created for the military during WWII as a small, compact and rugged all-terrain vehicle designed for transporting troops and supplies through rough terrain. After the war, Jeeps went into production as civilian vehicles, and since that time it has gone through many changes. Over the years it has been used as a snow plow, postal carrier, fire truck and even as an amphibious vehicle for land and water. Jeep CJ
The CJ line began in 1945 after the war ended. The CJ stands for “Civilian Jeep” and was heavily marketed to the public. The first model, the CJ-2A, was a modified version of the Jeeps used in the war. The vehicle had bigger headlights, an improved gearbox, an external fuel cap and other alterations. This Jeep was marketed as a vehicle for use on the farm and construction sites, but sales for the first model were brief. Since the first model, the CJ kept getting better upgrades each year with sales steadily climbing. In the 1950s, the first civilian CJs were offered, so now people besides just farmers and construction workers could purchase one for the road. While the CJ series was discontinued in the 1980s, the Jeep Wrangler was introduced as an alternative that was closely modeled after its predecessor. The Wrangler is still in production today.
Jeep Cherokee
The first Jeep Cherokee was modeled after the Wagoneer and went into production in 1974. This Jeep was all new, featuring bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and racy detailing that was intended to attract a younger group of drivers. In 1984 the Jeep Cherokee was completely renovated according to the market. The new model was called the Cherokee XJ and featured a much smaller, more compact design than before. The model was so impressive that it remained largely unchanged up to 1997. Even today the Cherokee XJ continues to be popular with 4WD enthusiasts.
